DONER KEBLOG
This is a delicacy that they offer at the Albert Heijn Grocery chain, peach yogurt drink. Delicious, even luke warm out of the dutch refrigerator. Duuuuuuude.

Check this guy out! His shirt says “Kill all the Dress Codes and Walk Naked in Jelly!” AND his Frites Oorlog were AMAZING! Also pictured is the Lion Mcflurry I ate afterwards, which tasted heavenly, but made me feel like I got kicked in the stomach while sweating out fiberglass.

Saw these at Albert Heijn (Dutch Safeway), and thought they were hilarious. Duo Saks!

I ate this Doner from this place in the Albert Cuyp Markt. I was not impressed, the lamb was gross, and this sando was wayyy toooooo dryyyyy.

I ate this and it was good. Picklled herring with raw onions and a sweet pickle on a bun. The dutch call it broodjeharing, and it is only three Euros. YES.

For lunch:
Frites Oorlog from the Waterloo Market. Oorlog means “war” in Dutch, and the frites come with frite saus (fancy mayo) and sate (peanut sauce) as well as freshly diced onions. I’ve heard two different stories about these fries, my girlfriend, Xela, told me they were called war fries because different factions of soldiers preferred different sauces. But the other night, this drunk Dutch guy said that they were called war fries because “the sauces have a war with each other.” Either way, it’s one of the greatest snacks on the planet.
Unfortunately, these fries were a little a soft, but they had a nice, mild sweetness, and were thicker cut, which I prefer. I think the sate and frite saus are probably the same everywhere-frite saus from the big yellow tub, and sate from a mix-but the diced red onions were a nice touch.

Breakfast this morning came from our Dutch pastry supplier “The Passion of Baking.” This chocolate croissant was sooooo good, flaky and buttery, not too chewy, the chocolate center was still gooey, and sweet, a perfect balance against the butter of the croissant. Overall a little heavy, but who really cares about that.
I was grateful to discover how light this apple turnover was. It had a thin laminate dough that was sprinkled with granulated sugar, and a delicious apple filling that was gently spiced with a honey-like sweetness. Sheer tightocity.

Frites with frite saus and sate from Sonny’s Falafel, which is about a block and a half from the Stumptown Amsterdam cafe. These fries are pretty much perfect, golden, buttery, sweet and firm, but not too crispy. I think he must blanch them a little longer than most. The sate here is a little too sweet for my taste, but I think everybody here just uses a mix.
